With the exception of dentistry, the medical sector in Belgium remains largely unconsolidated. Abroad, we already see practices from various medical specialties being grouped, with investors viewing this as an attractive opportunity.

We believe this trend will emerge in Belgium as well. That’s why SDM-Valorum was inspired to apply the Smart Deal concept to the medical sector, targeting private eye clinics as a first step.

Medipolis becomes the first component

The first Smart Deal in the sector has now been completed with the reputable Antwerp-based eye clinic Medipolis. This private clinic becomes the foundation of a new buy-and-build platform for eye clinics and ophthalmologists across Belgium. The aim is to unite several high-level practices under one framework. Thanks to economies of scale and greater scope, we believe the value of each individual practice can be substantially increased. Moreover, this structure allows doctors to better manage their future by attracting new talent. Each clinic retains its individual identity and communicates independently, so patients notice no visible difference.

How does a Smart Deal work?

The founder of an ophthalmology practice who enters into a Smart Deal transfers their practice to a holding structure. They become a key shareholder of that holding.

Practices continue to operate independently under the sole responsibility of local physicians and maintain their own branding. The holding does not interfere in the day-to-day management.

The Smart Deal also enables other doctors to become shareholders in the holding, making them co-owners of the practice where they work. This reduces dependency on the founder and allows for long-term ownership continuity.

Improved patient care and shared costs

The synergies created through Smart Deals help clinics reduce costs and offer excellent patient care. Through the group structure, clinics gain access to top facilities at different locations and patients benefit from the best medical teams. The larger scale also allows for more efficient investment in high-end medical technologies.
